The M.A Program in Heritage
Management in English (Master of Arts in Conservation
of Material Cultural Heritage) is a research-oriented,
hands-on program that is unique in providing the possibility to complete all
course work in one year, during three consecutive semesters (including a summer
semester). The program includes lecture courses, workshops, campuses,
excursions and field work. Participants will specialize in cultural
heritage in general and in the management,
public engagement and advancement of heritage sites and projects in particular.

The combination of
inter-disciplinary courses and field work provides the necessary quality of
training required for heritage professionals.

The studies consist of
36 obligatory Israeli credits (track B, without a thesis), and 36 obligatory
Israeli credits (track A, with a thesis). The study framework will
consist of mandatory departmental courses (14 credit hours), mandatory courses
and seminars unique to the specialization (16 credit hours), and recommended
elective courses both departmental and extradepartmental (2 for the thesis
track or 6 without thesis) (elective courses can also be in the form of
seminars).

In addition, students
without enough background in archaeology may be required to take up to two
additional courses in their first year, according to their previous studies.
Such courses will not be credited within the 36  credits. Supervision and
personalized tutorials will be provided to students pursuing the thesis option.
Track A students will accomplish their studies in two years (including course
work and a thesis). Track B students will have to accomplish their studies
by the end of the first
year.

The writing, submission
and review of the research thesis will be according to university guidelines
for the M.A. degree.

Program objectives

Our vision is for the field of
heritage management to receive academic, research-based, and practical
responses from within the archaeological community, starting from its
foundational worldview, extending through intersecting fields of knowledge, and
culminating in practical experience within the field. Specifically, the
objectives of this specialization are the following:

1. to lead the development of an
analytical and practical research field focused on heritage management from an
archaeological perspective;

2. to train researchers and
managers in cultural heritage and promote research-based activity, thereby
improving the management quality of cultural heritage assets in a manner that
is tailored to Israeli society and the international community;

3. to generate development,
expansion, and promotion of the status of material cultural heritage and its
bequeathment to the community;

4. to conduct advanced and state-of-the-art research culminating
in a thesis in the field of cultural heritage management.

Admission Requirements

Accredited BA degree.

A minimum of 3.0 GPA, 80% (B) (Israeli system) or equivalent in
all undergraduate classes.

Excellent command of the English language.

Experience in cultural heritage projects – an advantage

Some students will be required to attend supplementary courses
depending on their individual academic background.

Academic Prerequisites

Some students will be required to take
supplementary courses customized personally to each candidate’s background. these will be decided upon by
the Head of the M.A. department committee and the Chair of the department.
Supplementary courses will be taken either pre-session or during the first year
of the degree program. Students will be required to complete a total of 4 credit
hours by enrolling to courses available from the following list (this is list may change pending on

Practical experience in heritage
management

Students are required to complete 160 hours of practical
experience under the guidance of a curator, director, archaeologist, or another
heritage professional, concurrently with their academic specialization. This
format will allow to accompany, support, process, and discuss the learning
process in the field, both within university-based group settings and
individually. The student will engage in identifying and addressing challenges
(both independently and under guidance) in projects related to heritage
management, employing independent and systemic modes of operation. This will be
accomplished by leveraging research-based activity, utilizing knowledge gained
through academic specialization, applying critical thinking, and fostering
original ideas. The student will acquire experience in managing a small-scale
project in material cultural heritage, incorporating skills from various fields
taught in the program. The success of the practicum will be determined by the guide’s
assessment and endorsement. Each practical experience will be documented in an internship
journal recording all activities conducted by the student as per the
specifications. A successful completion of the practicums, including attendance
and assignments, is required for qualifying for the degree.
